For all Valpo Faculty: More About Library Services
Whether you are coming to VU from another institution or are a first-time college teacher, we encourage you to make an appointment with the librarian subject liaison to your department. Your liaison will help you learn more about the resources and services available to you from the Christopher Center. Included will be finding resources in VU's online catalog, Galileo, and finding resources from the library's website.
Twenty-one full-time professional personnel and over 60 student assistants comprise the Christopher Center Library Services staff. All ten librarians, including the Dean, are full members of the University faculty and participate in the University’s tenure and promotion processes. To connect students and faculty with information resources efficiently, the Christopher Center also houses the Writing Center (part of Library Services), the University’s Office of Information Technology, the Academic Success Center, the Teaching Resource Center, and the Graduate Tutoring Lab.
Completed in 2004, the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources has become the intellectual heart of campus, offering students traditional library services and access to modern technology associated with electronic information retrieval in one of the University's largest and most beautiful buildings. The recipient of several architectural design awards, the Christopher Center is a four-story, 108,000-square-foot building designed to redefine the academic library. Two electronic classrooms and 185 public computers complement holdings which include over 260,000 monograph volumes and 78,500 journal titles (primarily print and electronic formats). Another 300,000 volumes (primarily lesser-used periodicals) can be found in another distinguishing feature of the Christopher Center: its on-site, two-story automated storage and retrieval system (the ASRS). The Christopher Center was among the first academic libraries in the country to install such a storage system.
Extensive electronic holdings, such as the Library Catalog, WorldCat, subject databases, journals, and e-books are available in the library, throughout campus, and from any computer or mobil device. Best of all, all ten librarians are subject liaisons to various departments and colleges on campus; by working with them, you can determine very quickly what Library Services can do to support you and your students' academic needs!
